Press Release: Event Partnership with Lifeline Gippsland

Gippsland Women in Business Partners with Lifeline Gippsland to Empower Women with Mental Health Support Skills.

Gippsland Women in Business proudly announces its upcoming event, ‘The Accidental Counsellor’.  Adapted from Lifeline’s Accidental Counsellor Foundation Training, this unique and empowering event will provide women with the tools and knowledge to support those facing emotional crises. It will take place on Friday 6 September 2024, at Traralgon Golf Club, in partnership with Lifeline Gippsland and generously sponsored by Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers and Telstra.

We’ve all been in situations where a friend, family member, colleague or client shows signs of distress, anger, or despair. Knowing how to respond can be challenging, which is why Gippsland Women in Business offers this vital event. “The Accidental Counsellor' is based on Lifeline’s renowned training program, providing practical steps to recognise and respond to emotional crises or developing mental health issues.

It’s a crucial topic, with more than two in five Australians (42.9 per cent) aged 16–85 years having experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime, with one in five Australians (21.5 per cent) experiencing a mental health disorder in the previous 12 months, according to findings released by Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS 2023).

The event will include a 45-minute presentation delivered by Leanna Potter, Lifeline Mental Health Educator, to equip attendees with actionable tools for identifying emotional distress and responding effectively while emphasising the importance of self-care. Followed by a panel discussion of Gippsland representatives, including Orange Door and Gippsland Casa, who will share their insights on navigating these situations and introduce attendees to the region’s available mental health support services.

“This event is about empowering women in our community to provide emotional support while also prioritising their well-being confidently,” said Nirelle Bennett, Committee Member of Gippsland Women in Business.

Gippsland Women in Business extends a heartfelt thank you to Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers and Telstra, whose generous sponsorship has made this event possible. Their support highlights the importance of providing women with the tools they need to make a positive difference in their communities.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Lifeline Gippsland and have the support of Alan Wilson Insurance Brokers and Telstra to make this event truly impactful.” Nirelle says.
